Chapter Twelve

Logan

Nothing was better than running in the sand dunes. Luckily, the sand wasn’t hot because it was early in the morning. Rebecca brought little booties for him just in case it got hotter so his paws wouldn’t get burnt. They played a few rounds of fetch with the ball, then Charlie went to explore. He took off. Charlie ran right past them and they couldn’t keep up. They kept following his footprints.

Logan peered ahead. “That is one fast dog!” He whistled.

Charlie barked.

“Oh, there he is!” Rebecca said.

Charlie then ran around them with that happy bark of his. Charlie absolutely loved the sand! The joy of bringing this new pet into his life was life-changing. Here he was, having fun with his dog instead of working countless hours and driving his blood pressure up. And vice-versa. Charlie was out there enjoying life instead of being tethered to a heavy chain 24/7. They both had life-changing events in their lives.

Ready to explore, sand kicked up as Charlie took off again. He pounced and ran, plowing his way up the next sand dune. For every step Logan took up, he slid a few feet backward. He blew out a breath of air. Okay, he’d get the hang of this eventually.

Children played on the top of the dunes, some struggled uphill, while others rolled down the hill laughing. Suddenly, Rebecca lost her footing, held onto Logan, and they both rolled, bounced, and tumbled down the hill a bit, erupting in laughter. They got up and started to slide down, and it was so much fun.

“I don’t usually do this kind of stuff,” Logan admitted.

“That’s why you got me, baby. Just lean on me, and hopefully I don’t fall down the hill and take you with me.”

He chuckled.

“Are you having fun?” Rebecca asked, brushing the sand off of him.

He gazed deeply into her eyes. “Best time ever.”

“Good.”

“Why don’t we sandboard down like the kids? I can balance you on top of my shoulders.”

“You are a funny one. Us surfing? Doing acrobatics? Gliding down a sand mountain?”

“C’mon. You’d be like a pro surfer.”

She laughed. “No surfing today.”

“As long as I have you in my arms, I don’t care.”

She gazed into his eyes, and then he softly kissed her on the lips. Everything was perfect. He had the view, Rebecca, Charlie. Nothing was better than this. Charlie then jumped on top of them, licking their faces, wanting them to keep moving. There was too much to explore, and he didn’t want to stop.

They began to hike to the top again and were awarded with the most breathtaking views, sand dunes stretching as far as the eye could see. Logan held Rebecca’s hand and she smiled as they took in the view. Everything was covered by windswept layers of sand. It was a beautiful view, but Charlie was more interested in kicking up sand.

Then rolling in it.

They both laughed.

“I’m glad he got the chance to see the sand dunes,” Logan said.

“I couldn’t imagine him not seeing them.”

“I mean, just look at him.
